New to Medicare: getting Bridge-ready from day one

Short answer: The Bridge requires Medicare drug coverage — so as you enroll at 65, the decision that controls your GLP-1 eligibility is taking Part D (or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage) from the start. Enroll in drug coverage during your Initial Enrollment Period and you can pursue the $50 program immediately; skip it and you're locked out until the next enrollment window, with a late penalty accruing.

Program facts last verified against CMS: July 21, 2026

The setup sequence

During your seven-month Initial Enrollment Period: enroll in Medicare, choose either Original Medicare plus a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage (MA-PD) — both satisfy the Bridge requirement. Then see your provider about the prior authorization; there's no waiting period once coverage is active.

Two timing notes specific to this program: the Bridge ends December 31, 2027, so a 2026-2027 enrollee who wants it should move promptly rather than 'settling in first.' And skipping drug coverage at 65 because you take few medications is always a gamble (the late-enrollment penalty is permanent) — the Bridge adds a concrete, immediate reason to take coverage from day one.

Common questions

Does it matter which Part D plan I pick for the Bridge?

No — the Bridge works identically alongside every plan, with no opt-in. Pick your plan on your other medications' formulary coverage; the Bridge rides along regardless.

I'm 65 and still on employer insurance. Can I use the Bridge?

The Bridge requires Medicare Part D enrollment. If you're deferring Medicare while working, you're outside the program until you transition — factor that into the timing conversation, especially with the 2027 end date.

How soon after enrolling can I fill at $50?

As soon as your drug coverage is effective and your provider's prior authorization is approved — there's no additional waiting period.
